The MPU-60X0 is the world’s first 9-axis motion processing IMU. It integrates a 3-axis MEMS gyroscope, a 3-axis MEMS accelerometer, and an expandable Digital Motion Processor (DMP). The module can connect to a third-party digital sensor, such as a magnetometer, via the I2C interface. Once extended, it can output a 9-axis signal through either the I2C or SPI interface (SPI interface is only available on the MPU-6000). Additionally, the MPU-60X0 can also interface with non-inertial digital sensors like pressure sensors via I2C.
The MPU-60X0 uses three 16-bit ADCs for the gyroscope and accelerometer, converting analog measurements into digital output. To precisely track both fast and slow movements, the sensor’s measurement ranges are user-configurable. The gyroscope has selectable ranges of ±250, ±500, ±1000, and ±2000 °/s (dps), while the accelerometer offers ranges of ±2, ±4, ±8, and ±16g.
The module features a 1024-byte on-chip FIFO, which helps reduce system power consumption. Communication between all device registers is handled via a 400kHz I2C interface or a 1MHz SPI interface (SPI is only available on the MPU-6000). For high-speed data transmission applications, register reads and interrupts can operate at up to 20MHz SPI. The MPU-60X0 also includes an on-chip temperature sensor and a highly stable oscillator with a variation of only ±1% in typical operating environments.
